How Your Body Speaks Your Mind

May 09, 20254 min read

Have you ever had a gut feeling about something or felt tension in your shoulders during a stressful week? Thats your bodies way of getting your attention. It's not random. It's not in your head. It's the very real connection between your thoughts, emotions and physical health.

What if I told you that your thoughts can affect your health just as much as your food does? It's true. Every thought you think creates a physical and emotional response in your body. We often treat the body and mind as two separate things, but they're deeply connected.

Let's explore how your mental and emotional state can show up in your physical body and what you can do to support both.

What You Suppress Your Body Expresses

Stress, worry, fear and overthinking — don't just live in your mind. Emotions and experiences that are not consciously acknowledged or processed can manifest into physical symptoms.

Here are a few common ways emotional stress shows up physically:

  • Tight shoulders or neck tension → often linked to overwhelm or the pressure of 'holding it all together'

  • Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, cramps → often linked to what am I not releasing, what am I holding onto, what situations am I having a hard time digesting in my life at this time

  • Fatigue or low energy → often a sign of emotional exhaustion or inner resistance

  • Frequent headaches → may be linked to perfectionism, chronic stress or painful thoughts

  • Lower back pain → feeling unsupported or carrying a heavy emotional load

When we suppress or ignore our emotional state, the body has no choice but to try and get our attention another way...

The Science Behind The Mind-Body Connection

Emotions dictate our actions and behaviours which in turn, provoke our thoughts. If your constantly telling yourself 'I'm behind', 'I'm not good enough' or 'this is hard' your body responds like you're in danger. It holds onto stress. Stress activates the fight/flight/freeze response. This response is designed to help us in life-threatening situations — it floods our body with hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to help us run away or react fast. So the more we repeat stressful or negative thoughts, the more our brain accepts them as truth — and our body reacts accordingly.

And when our stress response is turned on for too long, it starts to take a toll on our body and mind: interrupted sleep, hormone imbalances, sluggish digestion, low energy — you name it.

We can't eliminate all stress but we can change how we respond to it.

Ways To Support The Mind-Body Connection

  1. Check in with yourself daily — Ask yourself: How am I feeling? What do I need right now? A quick scan can build awareness and prevent suppressed emotions.

  2. Journaling — Brain-dumping everything onto paper can help you process emotions and creates space for new ideas and thoughts to come in.

  3. Nourish your gut and nervous system — Prioritizing protein at every meal, eating whole foods and staying hydrated helps support our body and mind.

  4. Spending time in nature — Going for a 10 minute walk outside improves our mood, reduces stress, improves sleep quality and boosts digestion.

  5. Changing your inner dialogue — speak to yourself like your speaking to your best friend. You have the power to change the script. For example:

    • This is hard → I want this

    • I hate doing this → This makes me feel good

    • This is so much work → I love doing this

    • This is boring → This inspires me

    • I don't want to do this → I'm choosing to do this
